Tier 2
Tier Two of PBIS is for small group or 1:1 instruction for students with at risk behavior. This group of students received Tier One instruction, but are showing signs of needing more support. In order to determine if students need Tier Two interventions, staff must review and interpret data. Schools may use existing data to help determine if a student is in need of Tier Two support. Existing data may include grades, attendance records (absences/tardies), and office referrals (majors/minors).
Screening data may also be used to help identify students that need Tier Two interventions. Screening instruments may help determine which students need support due to internalizing behaviors such as mood related concerns-anxiety, depression, etc.
Teacher referral may also be a way that schools determine students for Tier Two support. If a staff member has concerns about student behavior, they may recommend the student for Tier Two support.
Once a student is receiving Tier Two support, progress monitoring begins to take place. Staff members that are providing the support will determine what data to collect to help determine if the interventions are successful.
There are several interventions that can take place in Tier Two of PBIS. Each intervention may be used for different functions of behavior such as: escape or avoid task, gain attention, and/or obtain or gain an item task or activity. Examples listed in our textbook include: academic interventions, different variations of check and connect, mentoring, service learning, and interventions for social skills in specific classes or settings.
